WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - On Saturday, Novant Health took part in a medication disposal event.
The event took place at the Novant Health New Hanover Medical Plaza and the Novant Health Scotts Hill Outpatient Surgery Center.
Individuals had the option to drive up and dispose of outdated prescriptions, medication containers, and syringes.
A healthcare provider explains why it's crucial to avoid keeping expired medications at home.
“Some medications could look like candy, so for young kids that are in the household, that could be a concern. Other concerns are that people could flush their medication, and that leads to an unsafe water supply,” says Sophia Jacome-Singletary, a Novant Pharmacy resident.
The event is held twice a year, and officials hope to share with others where they can go to dispose of medication.
There are year-round drop-off locations that have big steel safety bins.
