Tunkhannock, Wyoming County (WBRE/WYOU)— Individuals with potent prescription medications they no longer require are assisting in disposing of them properly this weekend. Wyoming County is one of the locations participating on Saturday for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
A drug take-back event at the CVS in Tunkhannock was called "Got Drugs? Take Back."
This initiative is part of an extensive campaign known as "One Pill Can Kill," aimed at stopping medication abuse.
The District Attorney likens unutilized medications in a medicine cabinet to a time bomb waiting to explode.
"They pose quite a temptation for grandchildren and guests; if we could eliminate this allure, we would also eliminate the chance that someone, especially a child, might begin down the path of pill consumption, potential addiction, and with fentanyl involved, possibly even face death," said Wyoming County District Attorney Joe Peters.
"These pills could pose a danger to any children—whether they're my own, visitors', or others'. Therefore, by getting rid of them, we prevent any child from being harmed," said District Attorney Peter’s father and former Scranton Mayor Eugene Peters.
The District Attorney states that annually, 100,000 unnecessary pills are correctly discarded in Wyoming County.
