Ensuring safety following a flood
Prevent Injuries
- Recognize the risks you might encounter and ensure the well-being of those dear to you.
- In case of evacuation, only return home after authorities confirm it is safe.
- Steer clear of downed power lines, utility poles, and cables as they may cause electric shock.
- Be cautious of trees and other debris that may fall down.
- Use flashlights Use battery-powered lanterns instead of candles to minimize the chance of starting a fire.
- Many injuries happen during cleanup. Wear protective equipment, like boots, long pants, work gloves, eyewear, and an N95 respirator to protect your lungs. Follow the advice of local public health officials.
- Learn how to use equipment safely. Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water because you could get electrocuted.
- Cleaning up is a big job. Take care of yourself. Work with a partner and take frequent breaks.
Pr otect Your Health
- Flooding can contaminate drinking water. Check with your local public health department about drinking water safety.
- Don’t get sick from eating spoiled food. Throw out food that got wet or warm. When in doubt, throw it out!
- Stay away from floodwaters. They may contain sewage, sharp items, and chemicals that can make you ill.
- If your home was flooded:
- If possible, dry your home and everything in it as quickly as you can within 24 to 48 hours.
- If returning to thoroughly dry out your home isn't possible within 24 to 48 hours, you can expect mold development. Once it’s safe to come back, ensure all items are fully dried, remove the mold, and verify that there aren’t lingering dampness issues.
- Maintain proper ventilation in damp areas. Dispose of items that cannot be restored or fully dried.
- Guard against carbon monoxide poisoning. Never operate gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-fueled equipment indoors in your house, cellar, garage, tent, or RV—even placing them close to an open window outdoors could pose danger. Since this toxic substance has no color or odor yet can swiftly lead to fatal consequences, act immediately upon experiencing symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, or weakness; head for fresh air without hesitation.
