DENVER ( KDVR )—Colorado might soon become one of only a few states in the country where SNAP beneficiaries can use their benefits to obtain a hot, ready-made meal.
Colorado state legislators aim to allow SNAP recipients in their state to obtain ready-to-eat foods that do not require heating.
This program is designed for people who are elderly, disabled, or experiencing homelessness. It's crucial that they continue to have access to warm, ready-to-eat meals since SNAP benefits do not include this coverage," stated Representative Yara Zokaie.
Currently, SNAP benefits in Colorado only encompass refrigerated items and ingredients. Zokaie is the House sponsor of a bipartisan initiative. bill looking to change that.
The SNAP Restaurant Meals Program is a federal initiative managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. For individuals using SNAP benefits to gain access to this program, their state must first decide to participate. Should the legislation under consideration at the Capitol be enacted into law, Colorado will join as the tenth state nationwide to adopt this program. This development comes amid significant demand highlighted by Joel McClurg, the executive director overseeing systems for Colorado Blueprint to End Hunger, indicating a pressing necessity.
"Persistent inflation over recent years has led to continued hunger issues. Since the start of the pandemic, we've observed continuous involvement in initiatives aimed at addressing this problem. The queues at food banks and distribution centers remain notably long," according to McClurg.
Any eatery has the option to join in, however, considering that the typical SNAP benefit amounts to roughly $6 daily per individual and does not include gratuities, primarily fast-food chains such as Burger King and sandwich shops like Subway have enrolled across various regions.
Not only does this bill have bipartisan sponsorship, but it also enjoys bipartisan backing, as evidenced by the fact that just one state legislator voted against it in the Senate.
Zokaie states that this "is not aRepublican or Democrat matter" but rather something everybody should support to assist those who are struggling.
In which U.S. states can individuals use SNAP benefits to buy hot meals?
As previously mentioned, currently only nine U.S. states participate in the Restaurant Meals Program .
States where SNAP benefits can purchase hot, prepared meals are Arizona, California, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Rhode Island and Virginia.
As explained by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service, the program also does not force participating restaurants to decide who is and isn’t eligible to purchase food from them with their benefits. Instead, SNAP beneficiaries will receive special electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards that are coded to be accepted at participating eateries. If a client is not eligible, their EBT card will simply be declined.
